The role

Join a long-term frontend modernization project for a retail checkout (Tills) UI application used on physical kiosks across the UK and Hungary. The system is live in production on over 35,000 devices, with ongoing development focused on improving developer experience, UI maintainability, and reducing time-to-market. Also, in this role, we will invite a new colleague to come to the client’s office 3 times a week at the beginning.

The application is web-based, tested locally in Docker containers or virtual machines, and integrates with various REST APIs.

What you will do

  • Contribute to the rewrite and refactoring of a complex, production-grade UI application.
  • Develop new features and components using React with TypeScript, adhering to performance and usability best practices.
  • Work closely with UX designers and backend developers to deliver intuitive, user-friendly interfaces.
  • Collaborate with a distributed team (Hungary and UK), participating in structured Agile workflows including handover sessions and acceptance reviews.
  • Ensure high code quality, performance, and maintainability across the application.
  • Help improve internal tooling, developer experience, and the local development environment.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of frontend development experience in a production environment.
  • Strong proficiency in React, TypeScript, and frontend architecture.
  • Experience working with Remix, React Router, or other modern routing frameworks.
  • Familiarity with state machines / state management tools like XState.
  • Solid understanding of REST APIs, cross-browser compatibility, and performance optimization.
  • Experience working in Docker-based local development environments.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, especially within distributed Agile teams.
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of complex features and technical decisions.

Nice-to-have

  • Experience with Lighthouse or other performance auditing tools.
  • Previous experience in retail, POS systems, or kiosk-based interfaces.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and frontend testing frameworks (e.g., Jest, Playwright, Testing Library).

Team & Work Style

  • Work within a 15-person engineering team split across Hungary and the UK.
  • Two cross-functional teams sharing a common backlog and well-structured processes.
  • Close collaboration with UX/UI designers to ensure high-quality interface design.
  • Mostly remote work after the initial onboarding period.
